Jai Paul

While not technically underground, Jai Paul is a British songwriter and producer that first caught my eye years ago with the release of his demo BTSTU. Short, sweet, melancholic is what I would use to describe that song. His vocals are exceptional but where he really shines is his production. It’s sort of if pop went through an edgy e-boy phase and this was the song that was made.

That song was released in 2011 and it wasn’t until 2012 where he decided to drop another demo, Jasmine. Production? Exceptional. Vocals? Well, they made me feel some type of way. There is no doubt in my mind that Jai Paul is an excellent artist and a pillar in music production back then and even now. Releasing two songs that were critically appraised and topping charts. He was new and different from the music industry yet he was dominating all aspects of the music production process. I uncovered him in 2015 and fell in love with the atmosphere he creates with his tracks. I did quite a bit of research on him but couldn’t uncover much, Jai Paul kept to himself and shaded himself from public light keeping this persona of being a mysterious and interesting artist. I did, however, found some controversy in which his work-in-progress of an album was leaked and sold illegally on band camp. I, as an emerging fan, had to see what the hype was about and found a copy of the mp4. It was weird listening to something that an artist didn’t release themself but anyone that was a fan could tell that that was indeed his production and his vocals on the tracks. Jai Paul fell from the earth after that incident and I didn’t hear anything from him since.

Cover to “Bait Ones” the infamous leaked album from Jai Paul. Now available in all streaming platforms.

Not only has he been sampled in Drake’s 2011 mixtape but also his style has been used as inspirations for tracks like “Homemade Dynamite” by Lorde. Now after a 6-year hiatus, he decided to delight the world by dropping two new tracks, Do You Love Her Now and He. I believe that this is the year that Jai Paul decides to share with the world his music again and while he did have a rough start with his work being leaked, I am willing to support him 100% through this new journey he has decided to take.

Stream Do You Love Her Now / He now.
