Purr

Genre: Indie-Pop

Finding new artists might be quite difficult for some, while for others it might be as simple as tuning into their Discover Weekly on Spotify. For me, it was when I sat down to watch Weyes Blood perform when I was greeted by the opening act, Purr. Purr was a powerhouse on stage and their lively pop presence did not take away from Weyes Blood’s more melancholy and sorrowful sound. Instead, I think both acts complemented each other quite well. Purr performed a few tracks including their 2019 single, “Take You Back,” which I immediately added to my playlists. After their performance, they quietly moved behind my row and we admired the amazing Weyes Blood together.

Purr is the collaborative project between childhood friends from New York, Eliza Callahan and Jack Staffen. Frankly, before that concert, I’d never quite heard their stuff, but man am I glad I did.  I briefly met Eliza Callahan and Jack Staffen and after making some small talk and praising remarks about their project, I wished them luck on their journey.

Purr’s sound is vastly different from song to song. While some songs radiate indie pop energy, the hearty drums and pleasing guitar chords on some of their other tracks just add a dash of rock influences that can’t help but try to break from that. “Gates of Cool”  is an example of this, seemingly giving me some serious Fleetwood Mac vibes. However, there is just something about producer Jonathan Rado that seems prevalent on the other artists he does work for such as Whitney and Father John Misty that seem to creep in Purr’s sound but not overwhelming enough to where it sounds similar. With a vibrant and catchy indie-pop sound, I do have to say that Purr’s music is sure to allure most.

With only a few singles out, it was quite difficult to satisfy my craving of wanting to listen to the songs they performed on stage. Recently signed to ANTI records, Purr just released their first debut album February 21st! Check it out now on Apple Music and Spotify!
